Since some of the latest research shows that “there is a common biological basis for the addiction to both alcohol and tobacco,” a new medication, varenicline (brand name Chantix), which has been used as a non-smoking aid for almost a year, is also showing promise in curbing the urge to drink. Experts warn that addiction is complex, so there will probably never be one cure-all, but since the same pleasure center in the brain is targeted in both smoking and drinking, this pill, at least, is promising news.
